B.S. in Mathematics Education

Successful completion of this program will qualify the student for an Indiana standard license to teach mathematics at the senior high, junior high, or middle school level (grades five through twelve).  Electives within the mathematics component of the program allow for adequate preparation for graduate work in mathematics or employment in mathematics-related positions outside of education. Most graduates who have completed this program do take high school mathematics teaching positions. However, some have elected to go on to graduate school in mathematics with an eye toward a career in research or university teaching. Others have taken positions in industry or business (including actuarial positions)

Program Requirements

This degree requires the completion of at least 120 semester hours, including at least 44 hours of general education, at least 31 hours of professional education, at least 33 hours of mathematics, and at least 6 hours of computer science. The completion of one or more teaching minors and/or endorsements is strongly recommended. Most minors require 24 hours of course work

In addition to the student teaching experience during one semester of the senior year, the education program at the University of Evansville includes early field experiences that start in the freshman year. In EDUC 200 (Introduction to Schools, Teachers and Learners), students spend significant time in area schools. These schools are diverse and varied in nature, including public and private, inner city and suburban, and elementary, middle, and high school. Internships at the middle-, junior-, and high-school level are key components of EDUC 363 (Principles and Strategies of Teaching in Secondary Schools) and EDUC 443 (Curriculum and Learning in Junior High/Middle School), courses typically taken in the junior year.
